Hello,

I am using apache2triad version 1.5.2 on Windows XP SP2, on a computer with Intel P4 3.2 GHz, 1 GB ram. Apache is using PHP, mod_perl and python.

I've noticed a strange thing happening with the apache service. Most of the times, even if the service reports it is up and running, when I'm trying to access a page or virtual host it reports "The page cannot be displayed". If I'm restarting the apache service everything goes back to normal for a period of time (I can't tell for how long) then the same error occurs again. I haven't noticed anything strange on logs but if you want me to send them over or to simply post them here (they are quite big) please let me know.

I find this very frustrating because i can't relay on the web server (as in giving an address to someone) as I can't tell wether its going to be online or not.

If you know any steps i should take to prevend this from happening I would be more that happy to do so.

Thank you,

Nick Dragomir

ok you need to do the following :

1 - blank your apache logs , (apache2triad\logs\)
2 - blank your system logs, (eventvwr.msc)
3 - start the apache service (services.msc) and monitor it untill your issue happenns again
at this point write "pv -e > c:\pv.txt" in a console , then reply to this thread with the following files attached :
c:\pv.txt
c:\apache2triad\logs\error.log
c:\WINNT\system32\config\AppEvent.Evt

Hello again,

I think I've been able to produce the error. I've been browsing through the files using IE and everything was just fine, then I've copied an .rar archive into the htdocs folder then tried to refresh the page (directory indexing). Nothing happend ... Page cannot be displayed. I think everytime there is something new (like bin files) added on the htdocs directory my apache crashes.

I'll try to attach the files.

Nick

P.S. I've renamed all the files to TXT as it didn't allow me to upload the files with .Evt and .log extensions

I have instaled win XP pro serv pack 2,i install apache i configure it then i instal my forum and everithing goes smoothly for about 10-20 minutes then with no explination at all it stops working but the apache monitor says that apache is runing and same does say task manager, but in reality it freezes and then i have 2 stop it and start it again then it runs nice for another 20 minutes or less but still dies, its not working with the restart gimmick!please some1 help...ne help on solving this problem of mine and i alsou think that this is a widely spread problem and i am not the only 1 that this happens 2.....ne help will be very apreciated!!
Hmm i alsou think that the grimlins in win xp pro serv. pack 2 r the ones responsible for this, and i say that because i had nero and some other programs that worked on the simple and modest service pack 1,but they didnt work for long on winxp pro service pack 2...in fact they all froze after a few minutes of using them....i used an older version of "nero 6.3" or something like that and it froze everytime i instaled it on win xp SP 2,the new version of nero works good with SP 2! i will try not 2 update the SP1 to windows SP 2 after i finish installing it and test if the win service pack 2 is the apache killer...

It's a band-aid over a gaping wound but if you'll set some options in services.msc apache will be restarted automagically when if fails. I had a similar problem and that was my temporary solution until I found the problem. (which was a false positive from norton on a log file that apache used). Anyways...

Start -> run -> services.msc
Select the apache service
right-click -> properties ->Recovery
And set your options however you want.

I use:
First Failure - Restart Service
Second Falure - Restart Service
Subsequent - Restart Computer
Reset Fail Count after 1 Days
Restart Service after 5 Minutes

Hi again,

I still wasn't able to solve this problem and the sollution with having the service restarted is not working since the service doesn't crash or stopps ... just the web server fails to respond.

I was wondering if what I've uploaded was of some use for you.

Regards,

your AppEvent log can not be loaded on my system , i use win2000 , i guess the fault is standard windows backwards compatibility insufficiency , but from the looks of it there is nothing relevant in there

your error log spawns over a period of 2 days , i need to know the time at which the problem occured , still there is not a lot of data there , it looks like your are experiencing this bug http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=21425 , read the comments there

sorry for the late reply
