Alright, last little bit of trouble and Ill leave you alone. I got an internal network running 3 computers + my apache2triad server They are connected to a cable router, then to a cable modem, then to the rest of the world. Remote users can access email, subdomains work fine, pages come up as they should, sql works fine..

when I go to ftp://my.site from inside my network, im able to access the files, it logs into the correct folders, everything works perfectly

outside this network is a different story. with the same username and passwords that work internally, it gives me connection timed out error.

Port 21 is set correctly on cable router to foward to the a2t server. Windows firewall has port 21 set in the exceptions to allow it through

any ideas

Is your ftp server to localhost, or maybe just your LAN's ip's?
Try to connect with telnet, and see what happens.
Post youf config.

Honestly, though if you can connect on another pc in your network, but not from outside, it sounds as though it's a firewall/router problem.

yea, I know it sounds like a firewall/router problem, but ive checked the settings, and they check out I even went as far and did a port fowarding on a huuge range to cover everything and shut down my windows firewall to test. made no difference (put them back to how I had it though :P)

My logs actually show that it connects, it just cant serve the pages, as if it didnt have permission

anyway,

# The BindPort directive specifies which TCP port should be used to listen for
# incoming connections. The standard FTP port is 21.
#

# The CommandTimeout directive specifies how many seconds to wait for a
# connected client to issue a command before dropping the connection. The
# default is 300 (5 minutes).
#

# The ConnectTimeout directive specifies how many seconds to wait for a data

# The MaxConnections directive specifies an upper limit on the number of

#
# You may refer to the following example of a user account setup. Note that

# Use the Mount directive to attach a local file system path to a virtual file

#
# Use the Allow and Deny directives to set permissions on paths in the virtual
# file system. Valid permission tokens are Read, Write, List, Admin, or All to
# indicate all four permission types.
#
# Use the Password directive to set a password for a user. If no password is
# set, the user will be allowed to login without a password.
#
# Examples:
#
#<User "bob">
#   Password "abc123"

# The next directive will cause all files and folders in C:\ftproot to appear
# in the server's root.
#   Mount / C:\ftproot

# Now we'll allow Read and List permissions for the root and all folders
# beneath it. We'll also explicitly allow Write permission for only the
# /upload folder (which in this example exists at C:\ftproot\upload) and
# all folders beneath it. Finally, we'll explicitly deny access of any kind
# to the /private folder (which would be located at C:\ftproot\private).
#   Allow / Read List
#   Allow /upload Write

# Here's another mount point that would appear in the server's root as /files.

-----EDIT----

my router is set to port forward port 21. now the way my router config shows it FTP Ext Port 21 Int Port 20 fowarded to 200.100.10.5

I saw another post that said he did an port range fowarding... so my question is, do I need to add another one that fowards port 20? (and where does it need to point)

--edit2---

opening port 20 did nothing lol

--edit three-- ugg had to fix something in what I described

I don't believe slimftpd needs port 20, some ftp programs use it though. It won't hurt to forward it for testing purposes.

From a port list I have.

TCP 21 File Transfer [Control]

Also check your systems error log for something that might be interfering.

Checked that all, everything seems to work. except for that last part

They are talking to the server just fine, over that ftp connection. but it is failing at the Data socket initialization.

any thoughts?

----EDIT----

I found the problem! and I reccomend adding this to the FAQ

From information talking to Roadrunner, they block certain actions incomming on port 80, specifically file and print sharing! Since I was using a browser to connect to the FTP, it HAD to do something with port 80, even though most was done in ftp on port 21!

I tested this by sucessfully logging on and seeing my files on a dos level ftp from outside my network.

So the choice I got are as follows. 1: tell everyone they need a ftp program to access or 2: have the entire site on a port other than 80

the second one Im curious about the steps needed to do that... ahh well ill worry about that once I figure out why one sucessful dos level ftp caused my server to go down lol but Ill worry about that when I get home

Ok.. somehow (and it happened immediately after I sucessfully logged on to the ftp in dos) a part of apache reverted back to think the domain is localhost, while most of the rest still have the correct settings for tri-fire.net! because of discrepencies, I cange run change domain again to fix the issue. looks like I need to do it manually. If you can answer the following question, it will help me.

Where does apache look to when it tells itself what domain it is on, the one place that controls everything below it?

ftp protocol doesn't use port 80
Try specifying port 21 when accessing the ftp

ftp://yoursite:21

Generally speaking if you can access your site externally then port 80 is allowed. Also, some isp's allow you to opt out of port 80 blocks.

As for things changing to localhost after you connect to ftp, that's a configuration change and wouldn't be changed by making a connection.

You can change the ports of apache by changing the listen area in your httpd.conf , and namserver.

E.G.
Code: #IPv6
#Listen [::]:80
#IPv4
Listen 0.0.0.0:80
NameVirtualHost *:80

Quote: Where does apache look to when it tells itself what domain it is on, the one place that controls everything below it?
Code: #server fully qualified domain name
ServerName Yourhostname:80
ServerAdmin admin@Yourhostname.com

Thats odd.. I had that same problem and as you running a router with roadrunner too. I tried everything to get it to work but noone outside the network could access it. I and others used coreftp and slimftp and still no luck. I knew ie couldn't get into the ftp server already. I even changed the ports for the ftp but maybe changing the entire server port to something else will work... thanks for giving me a little more insight into this problem.

Hi all, been using A2T since it came out, and this is the first time I have managed to get stumped on something.

Having the same problem essentially that this post is about.

I can access the slimftp via the lan no problems, but others cannot from outside.

I have several ppl helping me test, we have eliminated all software AV and firewalls from both server and client ends.

Dlink 804 router is pretty straight forward. And I have been over the conf umpteen times now.

Config of slim ftp is as simple as it gets. I have been over that too, and darn sure there are no silly errors.

My ISP does not block ports 21 or 80, or any for that matter, and I have a fixed IP addy.

I can confirm the slimftp service is running as it should and parsing its config without incident. There is also something listening on 0.0.0.21

When I consult the slimftp log it shows people making connection, then connection closing. Meanwhile they are told the connection is timing out.

My last server was running a previous A2T version, and ftp functioned happily.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to get more detail logged by slim? or other programs I could use to get more info on the fault. Or anything really.
Cheers.

ok then, to make sure slimftpd is that process listening on 21 get tcpview from http://www.sysinternals.com
if it is then try changing BindInterface All to BindInterface iourpublicip
if you say this has been not a problem in older releases maybe it is a bug in slimftpd 3.15 , replace yours with this attached exe to pugrade to 3.18 and see if the problem remains

Thank you for your reply, and that awesome link.

I am without ppl to help me test this evening.
I have checked with the suggested program. This was the result.

Code: Process -------- Protocol - Local address - Remote address - State
SlimFTPd.exe:1568   TCP   ajomods:ftp   ajomods:0   LISTENING

I note that it listed Apache as http and slim as ftp. All other services were labled with a port number instead. But I gather that is no concern.
I am not sure what Remote Address means in this instance.

I created a test account. ftp://specialisedtechnologies.com user=test pass=test Anyone feel free to try it if you have a moment.

the slimftp logs show clearly my friends attempts to connect, with or without lookuphosts information, they were getting through my router, because slim saw them. So I have turned my focus back from the router to server and slim config. conf as follows.

Code: #########################################
##                                     ##
##    SlimFTPd Configuration Script    ##
##                                     ##
#########################################

#
# Global server variables
#
#
BindInterface (This machines IP)

#
#
BindPort 21

#
#
CommandTimeout 300

#

ConnectTimeout 25

#
#
MaxConnections 20

#
#
LookupHosts On

#
# User accounts
#
#

<User "****">
   Password "******"
   Mount / d:\apache2triad\htdocs\
   Allow / All
</User>

<User "test">
   Password "test"
   Mount / d:\apache2triad\htdocs\test\
   Allow / Read List
</User>

I removed instructions for posting here only.

I also upgraded that file as well. sadly I could not get it to start. I tried a range of changes to my conf but it still would not start. when I swap back to the previous .exe it fires up again. The new one would not log or anything so not sure there.

With the bindinterface I tried my external IP and got this in the log.
Code: [1/17/2006 11:33:02 PM] SlimFTPd 3.17, by WhitSoft Development (www.whitsoftdev.com)
[1/17/2006 11:33:02 PM] The SlimFTPd service is starting.
[1/17/2006 11:33:02 PM] Executing "SlimFTPd.conf"...
[1/17/2006 11:33:02 PM] Configuration script parsed successfully.
[1/17/2006 11:33:02 PM] Unable to bind socket. Specified port may already be in use.
[1/17/2006 11:33:02 PM] An error occurred while starting SlimFTPd.
[1/17/2006 11:33:02 PM] The SlimFTPd service has stopped.

If I use the machines IP or bind all I get..
Code: [1/17/2006 11:33:30 PM] SlimFTPd 3.17, by WhitSoft Development (www.whitsoftdev.com)
[1/17/2006 11:33:30 PM] The SlimFTPd service is starting.
[1/17/2006 11:33:30 PM] Executing "SlimFTPd.conf"...
[1/17/2006 11:33:30 PM] Configuration script parsed successfully.
[1/17/2006 11:33:30 PM] Waiting for incoming connections...

I am not sure what entirely to make of this. there are no other ftp servers running on any of my machines, and the router points port 21 straight at the servers static ip.
I will test more when I find someone online.

edit:
I just spoke with someone on MSN who was able to log in to that test account. If I can get a couple more positive connections. I will be satisfied that its fixed. At the end of all this, the only important change seems to have been changing BindInterface from all to the machines ip.

Latest edit:
Ok I have confirmed that its working for the people I need to give access to.

To wrap this up for others that face this issue. Change Bindinterface from all to the appropriate ip address. Worked for me. :D

Thanks again Vlad, for the spot on advice, great link and excellent server package.
