I am currently working on a friends website and I am tryin to create a forum so that he can discuss things with other car fans. Can anyone point me in a direction to get me started? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,

there's many types of forums systems with different kinds of backends, using different languages. The most popular use php/mysql combination. You can google them very easily. Also, most forums tend to advertise themselves on the bottom of the page (for example these forums have a link to phpbb)

download phpbb from www.phpbb.ro or www.phpbb.com
to build a forum from scratch you must know PHP, MYSQL, JAVA, HTML very very well to learn a little go to www.w3schools.com www.php.net

I actually downloaded phpbb and got it working. Except for my mail but that is another story and if anyone can help me with the let me know...... here is my forum http://redbeardcustoms.no-ip.info/fourm
