I want to add differnt users with differnt passwords that have access to differnt parts of the server. So some one who has access to one file wont have access to say....apache2cp. So this way i can have a security hirearchy (i misspelled that i know). I know how to make a root user (im one) but i want a super user and a diffrent user.

Any help will be help will be meet with groveling.

sincerly

why don't you use htaccess. Thats a brute force solution in the sense that you will have to create a .htaccess for everyfolder and password for each and every user. But it would solve your problem. I am not familiar with auth_dbm. thats might be simpler.

Your right that makes since but how would they login. It says allow all or none is there a way to add the user manual right into the htacces file and then the password and user name are right there in the htaccess file.
I know what your talking about and it makes since its gettign there that hard. any more advice would be aparciated.
thanks

Just use the htpasswrd.exe in commandline. and copy the hash to the htpasswrd file in htdocs.

if you mean different users have access to different folders then .htaccess would do. But if you want different users to access different files in the same folder then I have no idea !!!

well you have quite some options , but you can't have file based authentification without some specialised scripts , only directory based
, especially on windows

the most simple one is mod_auth wich is enabled by default and alows you to have basic authentification

the same features , only with a stronger (md5) encryption are offered by mod_auth_digest

database based authentification can be achieved by using either mod_auth_db or mod_auth_dbm

and anonymous access without authentification but like the anonymous ftp acounts can be achieved by the usage of mod_auth_anon

most of those still require some use of .htaccess files

i sugest you also see the tutorial on http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/howto/auth.html and even the old http://httpd.apache.org/docs/howto/auth.html for more in depth explanations
