A2T still rocks, IMO -- still better than most WAMP configurations:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_WAMPs

Here's what I did to update my installation of A2T to PHP 5.3.5:
** (I didn't update PEAR or SMARTY)

(I didn't keep notes while I was doing this, so there might be a glitch or two -- read the sitepoint articles below):

First, backup:
    C:\Windows\php.ini
    C:\Apache2Triad\liveay32.dll
    C:\Apache2Triad\conf\httpd.conf
    C:\Apache2Triad\php (entire folder)

download the VC9, thread safe version of PHP
-- php-5.3.5-Win32-VC9-x86.zip
from: http://windows.php.net/download/
(these sitepoint articles are helpful and describe the difference in VC6 and VC9)
http://blogs.sitepoint.com/2009/07/07/install-php53-windows/
http://blogs.sitepoint.com/2009/04/13/how-to-install-php-on-windows/

- make a new, empty php directory in the A2T directory and put the downloaded php files in it
- copy the file "libeay32.dll" in the php directory and put it into:
C:\Apache2Triad\bin\libeay32.dll (write over the older version).

update PHP.INI in Windows directory
-- use Beyond Compare ( http://www.scootersoftware.com/ )
-- or WinMerge ( http://winmerge.org/ )
to compare the new php.ini-production with the current php.ini

.... replace the PHP configuration in httpd.conf (about line 1175) with this:

Code:
PHPIniDir "C:/Windows"

#php config
# ... JAN 11, 2011
# ... installed PHP 5.3.5
LoadFile php\php5ts.dll
LoadFile C:/apache2triad/mysql/bin/libmysql.dll
LoadModule php5_module php/php5apache2_2.dll
<IfModule mod_php5.c>
    AddHandler php5-script .php
    AddHandler php5-script .inc
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .inc
    AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
</IfModule>

You can test the install without rebooting Windows every time. Open a Cmd window and run:
C:\apache2triad\bin\httpd.exe -t

The "-t" will print any script errors. You will need to reboot Windows when you're done.
